Luxury Hardware: P.E. Guerin – Part 1
A few weeks ago I fulfilled a long held ambition – I went to New York and made an appointment to see the gorgeous showroom of the luxury hardware giant, P.E. Guerin. I’ve wanted to do this for years!
Finally, I made it to the luxury hardware mecca. I wasn’t disappointed.
You may know, from reading our blog, that John and I are hardware aficionados. We see it as a very important element in a home’s interior. One that shouldn’t be ignored. We have done renovations where we thought the hardware was so pedestrian, that we had all of the hardware in the house changed. Hinges, door knobs, locks, you name it. So, for me to see this array of luxury wares was nothing short of thrilling.
You can see the entire finished cabinet in the photo below, and a bit of the room, for which we designed all of the millwork and crown moldings.
For the same client,we selected this P.E. Guerin door lever and rosette for a master bathroom. What luxury!
Hinges, for me, are one of those refined details that create elegance in a home. Many people may think that hinges are rarely noticed, and not important. But I beg to disagree.
I notice them all the time. I hate seeing flimsy looking hinges, where the gauge of the metal is obviously thin. It makes me feel as though no proper attention was paid to these details in the building of the home. But when you look at these paumelle hinges at luxury hardware purveyor, P.E. Guerin, below, I think you’ll understand why I can get so excited.
The hinge below is called an olive butt hinge. See the resemblance to a large olive? This view is what you see when the door is closed.
But what I love seeing are the flange pieces:
They are of such heavy gauge metal that they just scream “quality”. These are the little visual cues you get when walking through a home that the homeowners understand elegance, and the differences such refined details can make.
We are always appreciative when our clients are open to using luxury hardware of this quality, as we know it will give them that feeling of security and safety in their homes that many of them desire.
I love this collection of key plates. Just look at the faces! For those of you inspired by Italian Renaissance gardens, you will see the “Green Man” iconography in these faces.
John and I love adding character to homes with French doors. Nothing emphasizes that important inside/outside connection better than a beautiful French door. Augment your French door with beautiful cremone hardware and it will transport you back in time. A time that is more leisurely, gracious and elegant. Just imagine opening your French door, into your fragrant and green garden, with your hand on this cremone handle:
Here’s an unusual twist: If you are a designer, you know that selecting the right door stop can be an exercise in frustration! But look at this little cupcake of a design – you can’t even tell that it has a Real Job as a door stop! Quick! Order some for your Christmas presents!
But P.E. Guerin is not only about older, historical styles. They have a large assortment of modern hardware, too. Just stunning.
Before we part for today – a little tidbit: the vault of original patterns at P.E. Guerin looks like the wand shop in Harry Potter movies! Now is that fabulous, or what?
There is so much to tell you about my trip to P.E. Guerin, that we will follow up soon with “P.E. Guerin – Part 2”. Stay tuned!
