Sunday Drive: Sally and I take the Salem Ferry to Boston.

Last Sunday dawned crisp and cool, with not a cloud in the sky.

Our plan and been to drive into Boston – visit the New England Aquarium, have lunch and walk the Rose Kennedy Greenway Park. On the spur of the moment, we decided taking the Salem Ferry to Boston was a much better idea.

The vista of the skyline from the water is always SO impressive!

The ferry docks next door to the Aquarium. Very convenient…

Sally and I had not been to the Aquarium for at least 10 years and we were looking forward to a positive experience. It turned out to be disappointing on a variety of levels. I’m sure part of out were the crowds. The place was mobbed with people standing 4 – 6 deep at exhibit tanks. The circulation did not seem to flow. d of traffic it experiences today. We both concluded the Aquarium was never designed with the kind.

And maybe I’ve moved to a place mentally where looking at fish and creatures inside aquariums in a wall leaves me a little cold. For example, I know the native habitat of trout and bass. I felt I wasn’t seeing it. Fish in several tanks showed evidence of fin rot. UGH!!!

Yet in the midst of my disappointment, I found and thoroughly enjoyed several exhibits.

Penguins… What’s not to love? The whale skeleton hovering in the air was terrific!

I don’t know much about jellyfish and they were fascinating to watch up close and personal.

Our favorite was the giant sea turtle in the main tank. Magnificent!

Exiting the Aquarium, there is a meandering waterfront walk that take you behind Rowes Wharf past the Northern Ave. Bridge to Congress Street, where we stopped at Smith and Wollensky for an unhurried lunch. Had to try their lobster BLT…  A family from France was seated at the table next to us and we were transported to another place – Paris, on the Seine.

Then began the long meander along the Greenway Park back to the ferry. The Janet Echelman aerial sculpture, “As If It Were Already Here”, hovering over the Greenway is an amazing sight!

    We were tempted…

All in all, a lovely day with good memories. I wonder where we’ll go next?

    Have a great week!

    Cheers,

    John

Slowing down is important. It helps one reconnect with the world.

        Cheers,

Yes it was, Rob. That’s why I love the kayak or walking. You have time to choose to take it all in. Often in unexpected ways.

What I love most about both of you is your wonderful positive energy!
You “dig for the positives” and you are also discerning enough to warn us about the negatives! You ended up with a wonderful experience….which I bet you always do!

      Bravo! And thank you!!
