A Mosaic Tile Mural can spice up your Bathroom or Kitchen
A mosaic tile mural is the perfect way to spice up your bathroom or kitchen design, if you are considering renovating either of these areas. Here’s why.
- They’re unique. You won’t look like the Joneses next door.
- Believe it or not, sourced properly, they are cost effective.
- Finally, your tile guy will love how easy they are to install. That’s right, easy to install.
In this post Sally and I will share our experience working with Artaic on our DXV Design Panel bathroom. Artaic is the industry leader and innovator for CAD designed, robotically assembled, cost effective mosaic tile murals.
Our Monet bath – beauty shot:
From the get go, Sally and I knew we wanted a mosaic tile mural in our DXV Design Panel shower. With its pixilated motif, it is the perfect medium to bring Monet and Impressionism into the 21st Century. It also created a perfect backdrop to the walk-in, doorless shower. We had never designed a mosaic tile mural before, but we had several ideas – big, bold and graphic, while saying “Monet” and “water lilies” – as shown in these early design inspiration photos.
Ted and Martha Acworth, owners of Boston based Artaic, were exactly the right people to brainstorm with and flesh out our ideas. Using their proprietary mosaic design software and robotic assembly system, Artaic can design and create the mosaic tile mural of your dreams. Your design is then produced robotically on 12” x 12” tile sheets and shipped with installation drawings and instructions, making for a simple, straightforward tile installation.
It is our good fortune that we are located in the Boston area and could meet with Artaic at their Boston office and manufacturing facility. Most clients from across the U.S. and around the world work with them successfully via email and conference calls.
We first met Martha and her design team, headed by Ashley Trap, to review and discuss our initial design ideas. We brought our bathroom plan, elevations, and inspiration photos.
We had conceived of a single water lily, blown up to a huge size, as the shower wall focal point, but we needed to hear their thoughts and suggestions to make sure we were maximizing Artaic’s artistic potential.
Here I am sketching with Ashley.
Ashley immediately grasped our vision of a water lily floating on the shower wall with its alluring reflections. It was her artistic expression of this notion that became the water lily in the shower and subsequently the “pond” around the tub. It was somewhere in these early conversations that we all agreed we wanted to connect the mosaic tile mural on the shower wall with a stream of “water” flowing out of the shower and toward the tub. This imaginary river/stream became the shower floor, and then flowed and lapped “water” around the tub, which became a simile for a boat. The mural was now fully three dimensional!
We had several more meetings in which we refined the design, drilling deeper into the detail and look of the mural, including selecting mosaic tile colors.
Here’s Sally with Lu Dubois and Ashley, from Artaic.
SAMPLE BOOK FOR APPROVAL
When the design was finalized, Artaic prepared a sample book for our final approval and authorization to proceed with production of the mosaic tile mural. In the book was a dimensioned and colored rendering of the mural, river and pond, tile samples of each tile color, and a full size 12” x 12” sample of an area of the mural. For a designer, this level of information makes it very easy to cross check both design intent and the necessary details to confirm all parties are on the same page. We approved our sample book on January 8, 2018, and the race was on to produce the mural for shipping to Minneapolis, where our bathroom was being built.
This is what our sample book looked like. You can really see the watery reflections in this rendering, and how the tile comes out over the floor. (The dotted line shows where floor and wall meet.) I love the ripples in the water of the “pond”, where the tub sits.
The tile was shipped in short order and installed with plenty of time to spare for the scheduled photo shoot. The feedback from DXV and their tile installer was “easy, peasy” – thanks to the installation drawing and tile labeling system.
For us, it was a total delight to work with Artaic, given their design talent, manufacturing capabilities and business acumen. Everything went smoothly and our personalities blended perfectly, too! Now what more can you ask?
A final installation photo – close up of the lily:
Our project represents one end of the spectrum of Artaic’s amazing capabilities. In closing, I’d like to share images of other designs and projects they have done over the years. Some residential. Some commercial. The point is, they can do pretty much anything you can imagine.
If you are inclined to avoid the full custom route, they offer a multitude of options from their Collection of standard designs.
In closing, let’s do a quick recap of Artaic’s capabilities and how they would work with you.
- They offer many standard designs from their Collection from which to choose, via their website.
- They offer full custom services. You bring a photo or idea to Artaic and they will work with you to realize your vision – at no initial cost to you.
- They create a custom sample of your design and send it to you for your approval prior to fabrication.
- Your approved design is created, packaged and shipped to you with installation instructions for your installer for an easy installation.
