Self Care and Wellness – The Bare Necessities of Life
Self care and wellness. I’ve been working on both since Sally and I downsized last August. It takes discipline to shut out life’s distractions and take care of those necessities of life – your necessities.
Every morning, one of my necessities is to sit at our front window and watch the world awaken. Early last week, as I sat looking out the window, morning cup of tea in hand, I noticed the crosswalk sign across the way was hanging upside down. I found myself thinking, “How appropriate.”
There were no school buses. Surrounding parking lots, usually bustling with people going to work or taking kids to school were quiet. With the morning’s drizzle, the usual morning walkers I have grown accustomed to seeing were absent. It was eerily quiet. This view is now my the new normal.
SELF CARE AND WELLNESS: THE AWAKENING
In these early morning quiet times, I plan/prioritize my work day and, perhaps, dream about this summer’s planned fish trips. In my mind, I might replay the previous Friday’s activities with our grandchildren Max and Colten, perhaps creating a new train layout for Max and wondering what new words will come out of Colten’s mouth. I let my mind wander.
Then things changed. We all know the reason. The stock market has gone to Hell in a Hand Basket. On this particular day, all those fears and anxieties that have been sitting very quietly in the chair beside me quietly made their way into my mind. Doing their utmost to disrupt and discombobulate my quiet time and the day. They’re a grownup’s version of the monsters we were afraid of as children. The kind that lurk under our beds, waiting for that moment to come out and scare the daylights out of us, when we were most vulnerable.
I will admit to experiencing the full range of emotions and what if’s – from getting sick, to death, to the stock market crashing and loosing everything. Just your everyday quiet panic attack.
I took deep breaths. Many deep breaths… Calm and order began to return. The sun was shining, reminding me it will rise and set every day. As will the moon and stars. Yes, Orion will be in the night sky this evening, as usual. The birds will sing. Flowers will bloom. I know we will be okay.
THE BARE NECESSITIES OF LIFE
I have no idea what today, tomorrow, next week, next month or year will bring, other than it’s not going to be what it was going to be. I’m at peace with that. Sally and I will find a way thru whatever comes. We have learned from our experience how to be flexible and how to make the hard decisions when they have to be made. When Sally and I downsized, we pared down to the essentials. We have each other, our son Drew, Lindsey and grandkids are 5 minutes away. Walks, exercise, laughter, a good book, a glass on wine at the end of the day and such are all we need – the bare necessities of life. The rest is only stuff.
Perhaps I’ll dig up my old copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
And, yes, we have TP….
